Make a Toy Story of your own with Miss Marcella’s Missions

Parade of Heroes, CotB’s gaming wing. has added a new Tricube Tales game to its catalog. This time it’s Miss Marcella’s Missions, a whimsical, child-friendly game that mixes the adventures of Toy Story with, well, the adventures of Raggedy Ann and Andy! Now chances are you know all about Toy Story.

Raggedy Ann by Johnny Gruell
GREAT ART: Johnny Gruelle is the creator, writer and artist for many of the early Raggedy Ann and Andy adventures, These images are now in the public domain, and Parade of Heroes created a role-playing game based on them.

They’ve made four movies (plus another one on the way), a separate Buzz Lightyear movie, a Buzz Lightyear TV show and single handedly brought the likes of Mr. Potatohead, Slinky Dog and Little Green Army Men back into the public conscious. Kudos to Pixar for all that!

But one franchise that the CotB team has always found interesting was that of Raggedy Ann and Andy. It’s not that we’ve actually read any of the stories, it’s just that the art in the books is just so dang good! Created in 1915 by writer-artist Johnny Gruelle, the Raggedy Ann series quickly became a major hit and sold millions of dollars in books and toys. And to be clear, millions of dollars in 1915 money is big time!

Anyway, the CotB team has always been aware of Ann and Andy, thanks to our wonderful mother, who kept their Raggedy Ann books and knickknacks around just so we — as children of the 1970s — got to know them. Somewhere along the way we cracked open a book and were wowed by the quality of illustrations.

So, long story short (too late), we decided to honor our momma, her love of this franchise with our own nod to it in the form of a kid-friendly Tricube Tales roleplaying game!

All about Miss Marcella’s Missions

In this Tricube Tales roleplaying game, players take on the role a toy who is ready for adventure — when no one is looking, of course. These toys have made it their mission to defend Miss Marcella’s homestead from all sorts of trouble. Set in the early 20th Century (think Waltons Era), the toys missions tend to be whimsical or generally heartwarming — the perfect low-stakes adventures for introducing new players to tabletop gaming. What kind of missions? How about rescuing animals from a flood of molasses? Or keeping an army of worms from devouring the fruit trees? Or helping Marcella’s father find his missing Navy medal? Simple ideas with plenty of opportunities to engage in roleplaying activities.

Here’s the official DriveThruRPG description:

In MISS MARCELLA’S MISSIONS, you adopt the role of a childrens doll or toy who wants your owner to be the happiest kid ever! When she talks to you about her fears, concerns and worries, you decide to do something about them when nobody is looking! Take on the role of a stuffed animal, toy soldier or a variety of dolls and make that little girl happy by completing MISS MARCELLA’S MISSIONS! This game uses delightful public domain artwork from the early 20th century to weave together a charming, family-friendly setting that is perfect for families and young children.

Make your Miss Marcella’s Missions character special

Players can pick six different types of toys for their characters — a China Doll, a Dutch Doll, a Jack in the Box, a Rag Doll, a Stuffed Animal or a Toy Soldier. Each choice earns them special abilities when interacting with certain NPCs. For example, the Dutch Doll has an affinity for dealing with wild animals, while the Rag Doll earns a similar bonus when interacting with household and barnyard animals. There’s even more customization available, too — each character can pick from a list of personal items, such as a wooden spoon to whack things with or a bag of buttons to make trades.

All in all, Miss Marcella’s Missions are sure to offer a delightful and entertaining tabletop experience! Give it a try!
