CITB 12 — Nancy Drew, Sinfest, Wednesday Comics, Lethal Legion, Teen Titans, Smokescreen minibust, Lockjaw & the Pet Avengers, Werewolves on the Moon

Wrapping up two or three weeks of purchases, here we are with Comics I Bought Today No. 12.

Nancy Drew Girl Detective No. 2 and No. 3 So far, I’ve read Graphic Novel No. 2. I genuinely enjoyed the story, but the art was really quite pedestrian. Even taking account of my general dislike for Manga-style art, this art isn’t even good Manga. In fact the character design reminds me of original Speed Racer cartoons. That might be intentional, but it’s not impressive to me. HOWEVER, this was a neat story. I will buy more of these if I see them. Purchased at Ollie’s Bargain Outlet.

SinFest Vol. 1  When I saw this solicited in Diamond’s PREVIEWS magazine, I was genuinely excited. It had been years since I had seen SinFest, but as one of the strip’s subscribers way back when it was offered that way, I can say I always looked forward to it. This is a highly professional comic strip — funny and wonderfully drawn — and I can’t recommend it enough. Purchased at Comics Store West.

Wednesday Comics No. 1 and No. 2  You can read my review of Wednesday Comics No.1 here, and it was amazing enough for me to be on-board with it for the entire 12 weeks. This is one “comic” that really impressed me!  Purchased at Comics Store West.

Dark Reign: Lethal Legion No. 1 Have I mentioned that I have a Twitter feed? Well, that’s where I reviewed this comic. It was OK, but I can’t say I’m compelled to buy the next. Why’d I buy it, I tend to like it when a comic features non-superstar characters. When you have a line-up that includes Nekra, Grim Reaper and Gray Gargoyle, then I buy it! Purchased at Comics Store West.

Teen Titans No. 72 I’m officially two issues behind in reading this. I will say that of all the Titans to feature as a backup, why’d they pick Ravager? I had enough of Deathstroke in the 1990s. I have no desire to read about his daughter. Purchased at Comics Store West.

Booster Gold No. 22 Oh, look. MORE DEATHSTROKE! Great, just what I wanted. Yes, I’m still buying. It’s perpetually on the bubble of being dropped. I’m giving it some life after it adopted Blue Beetle into its pages. Still, I want to see Booster find some of his own villains. At least they have veered away from constantly reliving Booster’s immediate past.  Purchased at Comics Store West.

Lockjaw & the Pet Avengers No. 3 This has been a great series so far, and while there’s only one issue left after this one, you can bet I’ll be picking up any more that arrive. I am now officially demanding a Pet Avengers/Great Lakes Avengers crossover.  Purchased at Comics Store West.

Werewolves on the Moon (vs. Vampires) No. 2 Yes, No. 1 was completely juvenile, but I laughed through it quite a bit. I hope this series does well, because anything that puts down “Goth Culture” is good in my book.  Purchased at Comics Store West.

Transformers Smokescreen mini-bust — After buying my Jack of Hearts mini-bust, I eventually decided it wasn’t enough to have one statue of an obscure character. I needed two! So with Transformers fever gripping me after my recent animated series on DVD purchase, I started looking around for someone neat. It was between Cliffjumper, Smokescreen and Ratchet. I picked Smokescreen, the “gambler” of the Transformers Universe. I have to say, this thing is a sweet looking statue! Purchased at Toy Rocket.
